1. Check Volume Levels
This may seem obvious, but it’s still worth double-checking. If the volume level on your phone is too low, you won’t hear any sound while playing or recording stories on Snapchat. Press the Volume Up button on the side of your phone to increase the volume level. If the volume is already full, try turning it down and then up a few times. After that, check if you can hear the sound while playing stories.
2. Check the Audio Output Device
Is your phone connected to a Bluetooth device, such as a speaker or headphones? If so, the audio could be coming from the connected Bluetooth device. To avoid confusion, you can either temporarily disable Bluetooth on your phone or disconnect devices that you aren’t using. Following this, try to load or record Snapchat stories again and see if you can hear the sound.
3. Force Close and Reopen Snapchat
Next, you can try force-stopping the Snapchat app and opening it again. If it’s just a one-off glitch that’s causing issues with the Snapchat story sound, restarting the app should do the trick. To force-close Snapchat on Android, tap and hold its app icon and tap the info icon from the menu that pops open. Tap the Force stop option in the bottom right corner to close Snapchat. If you’re using Snapchat on an iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or press the Home Screen button twice to bring up the app switcher. Locate the Snapchat card and swipe upwards on it to close the app.
4. Allow Snapchat to Use Your Microphone
Snapchat requires access to your phone’s microphone to capture audio while recording stories. If you’ve previously denied Snapchat this permission, the app will record your stories without sound. Follow these steps to enable microphone access for Snapchat.
Android
- Long-press on the Snapchat app icon and tap the info icon from the menu that appears.
- Go to Permissions.
- Tap on Microphone and select Allow only while using the app.
iPhone
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to tap on Snapchat.
- Toggle on the switch next to the Microphone. Also Read: What Do Icons, Symbols, Emojis Mean on Snapchat – Complete Guide
5. Turn Off Battery Saver Mode
The battery saver on your phone may also prevent the Snapchat app from running smoothly on your Android or iPhone and cause problems. Hence, it’s best to disable it if you’re experiencing issues like the one discussed here.
Android
- Open the Settings app on your phone and tap on General management.
- Go to Battery and disable the toggle next to Power saving.
iPhone
On your iPhone, launch the Settings app. Go to Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.
6. Check If Snapchat Is Down
You might not be the only one having issues with Snapchat. It’s possible that Snapchat servers are experiencing issues in your region. If that’s the case, the Snapchat story sound will not work no matter what you do. You can visit a website like Downdetector to check if Snapchat servers are down.
7. Clear Snapchat App Cache
As you continue to use Snapchat to capture photos, view stories, and try filters and lenses, the app collects cache data. While this data allows the app to load faster and run more smoothly on your phone, it is not uncommon for it to become corrupted over time. For such occasions, Snapchat allows you to clear the cache data right from its in-app settings menu. Follow these steps to clear the Snapchat cache on your Android or iPhone.
- In the Snapchat app, tap the profile icon in the top left corner and then tap the gear icon in the top right corner to visit the settings menu.
- Scroll down to the Account Actions section and tap on Clear Cache. Select Continue when prompted.
8. Update the Snapchat App
A buggy Snapchat app build could ruin your experience and trouble you with such issues. Hence, it’s a good idea to update the Snapchat app on your phone if you haven’t done so already. Open Play Store or App Store on your phone to update the Snapchat app. Once updated, check if the sound is working when you load a story on Snapchat.
Bring Snapchat Stories to Life
Things can get confusing when the Snapchat story sound stops working all of a sudden. Thankfully, resolving the issue isn’t too difficult if you follow the suggestions outlined above. However, if nothing works, you can consider reinstalling the Snapchat app as a last resort.
